The reports of the Steeler's defense's death are greatly exaggerated!

“ The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated .” ~ Mark Twain

Steeler Nation the above quote is a quote credited to the great writer and literary icon Mark Twain after hearing false reports of his death. This same quote could be used by the 2011 Steeler defense.
Lately many people have the Steelers dead and buried especially the Steeler's defense .

Former NFL player Warren Sapp now turned “NFL analyst ” stated after the Steeler's week one Loss 35 -7 to the ravens that he had 3 things to say about the Steelers “Old , slow and its over” He then began to criticize linebacker James Harrison and Safety Troy Polamalu's play and made comments that suggested the two players are washed up. Heck he even took shots at Hines Ward saying that his 13 year old daughter could cover Ward.

Steeler Nation ,the Steeler's defense is alive and well and is still a great defense . Sapp seems to be an appropriate name for a person that would spew such mindless dribble after just one bad game.

Don't get me wrong the Steelers are a veteran defense and there are some players that know time is no longer on their side, But that does not mean they are washed up. The Steelers have plenty of young play makers on this defense. LaMarr Woodley and Lawrence Timmons to name just a couple. Troy Polamalu was the NFL defensive player of the year in 2010 and James Harrison in 2008. Not many defenses can say that they have two recent NFL defensive players of the year on their defense. CB Ike Taylor is having an outstanding season so far only allowing 1 pass completion in two games and he usually covers the opponents best wide reciever.

Yes Polamalu and Harrison are both coming back from injuries. Polamalu played the end of last season and the Super Bowl with a partial tear in his Achilles tendon. Harrison had two operations on his back this offseason and was unable to workout as hard this offseason but is getting stronger every week and should be at full strength by mid season.

Polamalu shows no signs of lingering problems from last years injury and says he feels great and seems to have not lost any quickness. The play that Sapp refereed to had nothing to do with lack of speed. Polamalu just guessed wrong and began to play the run and was out of position by time he realized it was a pass play. It happens to the best of them.

Sapp also said that the Steeler's 24-0 win over the Seahawks changes nothing to him. Sapp fails to realize that with all the new rules making it easier on quarterbacks and wide outs to move the ball , holding a team scoreless is more impressive then ever in today's NFL no matter who the opponent . The Steelers held the Seahawks to under 200 net total yards. That's no small feat with Quarterbacks and offenses league wide racking up record breaking highs in yardage and scoring.

I admit that it will take more then a shutout of the Seahawks to prove that the Steeler defense is still a great one but Sapp has buried the Steeler defense prematurely and he and the rest of the doubters will soon see the error of their ways. Sapps comments may be the fuel that feeds the Steeler's fire for the rest of this season as the Steeler defense makes saps out of all the doubters . The reports of the Steeler's defense's death are  greatly exaggerated! Steeler Nation ,let the doubters doubt, they have no idea what the Steelers and Steeler Nation is about!
