Just think what the Steelers destiny may have been if they never chose Troy Polamalu or Ben Roethlisberger! Luckily for us, the Steelers made the right choices and lets hope that they continue to choose wisely this draft.
Here is a look at potential choices and scenarios .
The Steelers need positions are Cornerback, Offensive line, and Defensive line.
Cornerbacks
Aaron Williams, CB Texas: 6-1 203 Great size and potential . Very athletic and willing to tackle but still raw and is not a finished product . Declared for the draft as a JR. Needs to be more consistant.Sometimes does not seem to play up to his talent level . Ran a 4.56 40. Some say may be better Suited as a safety.
Brandon Harris , CB Miami: 5-10 190 Is very athletic with quickness and good instincts. Plays aggressive and physical. Competitive and hard worker. Size may be a problem at the next level and has average recovery speed. Declared for the draft as a JR.
PLAN B If the Steelers trade out of the 1st RD, here are a couple corners that may be available in early RD 2.
Ras I Dowling, CB Virginia:6-1 200 Great at man to man coverage...Physical against the run not afraid of contact. Shows good football smarts and awareness. Missed most of the 2010 season with knee and ankle injuries.
Curtis Brown, CB Texas: 6-0 185 Good size ... quick footed.. Able to change direction easily and has good speed...Sometimes seems to not be physical enough and may get caught looking in the backfield .
Now on to the Offensive line
Derek Sharrod, OT Miss ST: 6-5 321 Great size and quickness, Smart and above average football instincts. Very good pass blocker . Team leader and hard worker. Needs to work on strength at next level.
Wild Card If the Steelers decide to trade up and get Pouncey's twin brother as is rumored .(Its a long shot.)
Mike Pouncey C/G Florida :6-5 309 Great size with big frame...Quick and agile ...very athletic with great balance. Strong at the point of attack...Very good work ethic and leadership. Must work on hand technique at next level .Needs to become more polished .
Now Defensive Line
Cam Heyward, DE, Ohio St.: 6-5 290 Versatile and powerful DE who played in 3-4 scheme but could play 4-3 . Strong against the run and can also rush the passer. Great awareness and football instincts . Tough ,plays through pain . Not known as a great pass rusher, needs to work on technique .
Phil Taylor,DT, Baylor: 6-3 334 Can be the ideal fit for a 3-4 team .Has great size and strength and can take on double teams against the run.Very powerful ,able to push the pocket. Has Character issues ...transferred from Penn ST. after off the field issues. Weight and conditioning may become a concern.
Ok Steeler Nation I hope this gave you a little insight to what may or may not happen in the 1st RD for the Steelers . Who really knows? Only time will tell and it's almost time! So remember try to make wise choices and lets hope the Steelers do too!
