NFL draft is right around the corner. The Steelers will be picking 31st in the 1st RD . The Steelers have been very successful in the last decade or so in the 1st round of the draft . One person that has been a big factor in the Steelers success not only in the draft, but as a team since 2000 is Director of Football Operations Kevin Colbert.
Kevin Colbert came to the Steelers in 2000 from the Detroit Lions. Colbert spent 10 years(1990-1999)with the Lions organization as Pro Scouting director and also assisted in the evaluation of college talent. The Lions made the playoffs 6 times during his time there. Since Kevin Colbert left, the Lion's Win-Loss record has been 48-128 and they have yet to make the playoffs.
Since Colbert's arrival in 2000 the Steelers have been one of the most successful organizations in the NFL and all of sports. The Steelers regular season Win-Loss total has been 115-60-1 in this span. The Steelers have played in 5 AFC Championship games since 2000 and won 3. They have 3 Super Bowl appearances and 2 Super Bowl Championships.
Kevin Colbert and his Scouting staff have made many great moves in the 1st round of the draft ,QB Ben Roethlisberger and S Troy Polamalu to name a couple. Let us not forget the many other moves such as picking up DE Brett Keisel in the 7th round . Signing free agent LB James Farrior in 2002 ,or street free agents RB Willie Parker and Linebacker James Harrison. The list goes on . Kevin Colbert is Pittsburgh born and raised . He has known the “Steeler Way” for a long time.
Kevin Colbert is a very low key guy by all accounts. He deflects any credit for the Steelers success and goes about his work in Stealth mode.Flying silently under the radar but leaving no stone unturned. One could argue that Kevin Colbert has been the best Director of Football Operations/GM of the past decade, but I'm sure he would rather let the results do the talking. None the less ,the Steelers and Steeler Nation are very lucky to have him.
